The Most Exciting Meet of the Year!

Burke Centre Stingers at Hayden Village

Rapids, Dolphins, Squids, Marlins Take Titles

And in what was probably the most exciting meet of the year, the home-standing Hayden Village Villains won the final two relays, one by just over a second and the other by less than one third of a second, to come from behind to beat the Burke Centre Stingers, 219 to 218.

In a microcosm of one of the closest CSL meets ever,
Hayden Village and Burke Centre Stinger freestyle
swimmers compete neck-and-neck. Click to enlarge.

Hayden Village's largest lead of the meet was only 15 points, and Burke Centre's was only 14 points. The meet featured an incredible fifteen lead changes, four ties, eleven 1-point leads and seven 2-point leads. Whew!

Down to the Wire!

Stingers at Hayden Village, July 18

By Molly Emery

The most exciting meet of the 2009 season came down to the wire, down to the very last relay to determine the winner of the meet. Unfortunately for the Stingers, it was the Hayden Village Villains who prevailed in the end to win the meet by a mere one point victory, 219 to 218. The 13-14 and 15-18 girls' relays, anchored by Nicole Steinbicker and Karen Bumiller, respectively, pulled out unexpected and incredible victories, leaving the Stingers in need of only one mixed-aged relay to secure the win. Both mixed-aged relays gave it their all, but in the end were out-touched by the Villains, the girls by little over one second and the boys by a mere three-tenths of a second. Despite the defeat, the Stingers swam tough in arguably the most exciting meet of the season!

Double event winners: Calvin Miller (free, back), Amanda Combs (free, breast), and Kyle Bumiller (breast, fly).
Single event winners: Pierce Beima (free), Jared Hayes (back), Nadia Steinbicker (back), Serena Utech (breast), Jenna Bumiller and Rachel Pak tied in the 8 & under fly, Nick Longo (free), Savannah Combs (free), Josh Daniels (back), Alyssa D'Anna (breast), Sean Poling (back), Chris D'Anna (back), and Matt Osiecki (back).
Relay winners: 9-10 boys (Josh Daniels, Tyler Strong, Bryce Johnson, Nick Longo), 11-12 boys (Sean Poling, Sam Richter, JP Boland, Weslee Richmond), 11-12 girls (Sara Hudson, Amanda Combs, Lydia Chen, Maura D'Anna), 13-14 girls (Sarah Miller, Samantha Stallings, Kristin Deegan, Nicole Steinbicker), 15-18 boys (Matt Osiecki, Peter Fields, Kyle Bumiller, Luke Coplan), and 15-18 girls (Tess Miller, Rachel Moore, Courtney Orvig, Karen Bumiller).
