Job Description
The ManorGate Marlins swim team is a 170+ member summer recreational swim team in the Colonial Swimming League. Practices are held at the ManorGate pool in Centreville, VA. The Marlins team is dedicated to operating in a family-friendly, culturally diverse environment, focusing on developing swimmers and encouraging them to have a sound balance of athletics, team spirit and fun, while exhibiting good sportsmanship in a competitive environment.We strive for success by focusing on swimmer’s technique, teamwork, sportsmanship, and team spirit.  We are looking for a leader who will create a positive environment for all swimmers, regardless of age or ability. 
 
Options are also available for additional income/revenue with the following programs.
  • A winter program is also offered to Marlins swimmers, which is coach-run and operated. The winter program is located at the Cub Run Rec Center in Chantilly, VA.
 
Job Description: The Assistant Head Coach will be responsible for collaborating with the Head Coach to prepare for and conduct team practices, providing a training experience that maximizes swimmers’ long term development and inspires and challenges swimmers to be their best, in an environment that focuses on positive social interaction and good sportsmanship. The Assistant Head Coach should be a good mentor and set a positive example for the entire coaching staff and the swimmers.
 
Assistant Head Coach responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Coaching swimmers on-deck and in the water by teaching correct stroke techniques;
  • Providing feedback and preparing participants for competitive swim meets;
  • Working with and managing junior coaches;
  • Working with Head Coach to prepare meet entries;
  • Sending pertinent communications to parents;
  • Working collaboratively with all members of the swim team including: head coach, junior coaches, interns, parents, and the Board of Directors;
  • Promoting the awards programs and support selection process for season end awards;
  • Other activities as directed by the Board of Directors.
 
Required Skills/Experience:
  • Experience coaching a competitive swim team
  • Experience working with children ages 5-18
  • Availability to participate in all events including daily practices, meets, and periodic social and team-building events
  • Experience developing meet lineups and preparing meet entries in collaboration with Head Coach
  • Ability to plan and coach team workouts including dry land workouts
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to enforce pool regulations in a firm manner while maintaining good public relations
  • A fun, encouraging, and positive attitude toward swimmers of all abilities, parents, coaches, and fans
  • CPR certification and knowledge of emergency medical procedures
  • Able to pass a background check
 
Preferred Skills/Experience:
  • Excellence in identifying and addressing stroke flaws through development and technique correction
  • Outstanding communications skills with children of all ages and abilities
  • Experience with TeamUnify
  • Confident and motivating presence

Typical Team Schedule:
 
Afternoon practices
Every weekday from the day after Memorial Day until the last day of Fairfax County school:4:30pm – 7:30pm: three skill-based practice groups
 
After school ends, every weekday:
8am – 11:00am: three skill-based practice groups
 
Meets
According to the Colonial Swimming League calendar – typically the third week of June until the last weekend in July
Wednesday nights – Developmental Meets
Saturday mornings – Division Meets
 
Time Trials
Typically second weekend of June on Saturday morning
 
CSL Relay Carnival
Typically third Sunday of July
 
CSL Divisonals
Typically fourth Saturday of July
 
CSL All-Stars
Typically last Saturday of July
